This is the newer material dug since 2016 from the other side of the hill from the original spot, called "New Howardite", "Red Howardite" and "Sunset Howardite" and originally named as "Lovelock Flame" and "Fingerprint Agate" and then a short while later "Flamingo Agate" and "Royal Flamingo Agate."  The best name for this material is ROYAL FLAMINGO AGATE.  This generally cuts better than the old original Howardite did (the old material was tempermental to work with and needed extra care in cutting) but this new stuff does NOT have the "Rattlesnake" or "Plaid" pattern the old material is famous and cherished for.  Still, a very beautiful material that has become a new favorite material.

Price is $85.- per POUND in mixed sizes or large pieces, above-average pieces that were hand selected for quality (Not Mine Run).  We can also offer better to top grade lots, contact us.

The problem with the name Howardite. The original Rattlesnake Pattern material was called "Howardite" way back in the 1960s and was named after the original finder. New finds in the same general area are now being called "New Dig Howardite, Red Howardite and Sunset Howardite."  Technically "Howardite" is an incorrect trade term for both the old and new types of this material because scientifically speaking, true Howardite is a type of Meteorite.  These agate/jasper types are NOT Meteorites.  Use of the term "Howardite" in the Rockhound and Lapidary Communities has caused much confusion and misinformation.   The OLD Rattlesnake pattern material should be called RATTLESNAKE JASPER while the newer material should be called ROYAL FLAMINGO AGATE to avoid confusion and misrepresentation/mislabeling and other legal issues.  Specifically, The FTC prohibits misrepresenting gemstone names, specifically incorrect varietal names, and the use of misleading terms.  The FTC's "Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries" prohibit using unqualified names to describe a product that isn't a mined stone of that type. The FTC can take action against companies that engage in unfair or deceptive practices, potentially leading to cease and desist orders, injunctions, and monetary penalties.  Simply put, because HOWARDITE is actually a type of Meteorite, calling these Agates or Jasper types such is unfair and deceptive, and violates federal law, and they should be called by what they really are: RATTLESNAKE JASPER or ROYAL FLAMINGO AGATE.
